THE GREEN TICKET

The Green Ticket.org is a Non Profit Organisation aimed to promote environmental awareness through reforestation and carbon sequestration initiatives. The objectives are to promote the conservation and sustainable use of our natural resources and to promote co-operation between all people and conservation agencies concerned about the environment and to initiate and develop environmental education, conservation and skills development projects.

Our re-forestation programme is ideally situated on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, which is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. This is an evergreen afro-montane fynbos and forest region and is perfectly suited climatically to have authentication in carbon sequestration. This area is regarded as the Southern hemisphere lung of the planet!

This programme offers everyone the chance to purchase a Green Ticket for their carbon footprint. This ticket purchase ensures funding for a set amount of trees to be planted to off-set your emissions from air-travel, car journeys, household running costs to company offices etc.

Our carbon calculator conforms to the standards set out by the Green House Gas (GHG) protocol and will help you to work out the amount of harmful emissions deployed into the atmosphere. Find out the amount of trees you need to plant bearing in mind the variable influences of age and type of tree, geographical location, climate, altitude, soil composition and biodiversity. We record and monitor all trees planted to ensure healthy growth and investigate possible future sites for planting. The continued preservation of existing forests is our seed bank and the savior for our future forests.

Remember certain indigenous forests are quite impervious to fire which enhances our success rate of rehabilitation and re-forestation plans.

The Western Cape contains almost 20% of the biodiversity of flora found on earth. Scientists all agree that biodiversity enhances nitrogen and carbon dioxide fixation more so than mono culture. Therefore, we try to create a duplicate of the natural environment and do not just plant trees but recreate eco-systems. This means we pursue the development of what we call “patch community planting”. We work a pioneer plant community around a climax and sub climax tree association including micro organisms and naturally occurring bacteria in a symbiotic relationship.

The Green Ticket.org recognises the importance of getting the younger generations more involved in all things green and has developed environmental education projects with Ingwe Forest Adventures, an established outdoor educational venue offering wonderful opportunities for environmental projects, stimulating camps and workshops.

Human and conservation issues are intricately linked, and with that as a guiding principle, The Green Ticket.org is committed to providing skills development and job creation schemes where nurseries and other related businesses are created, thus perpetuating self sustaining community projects plus responsible and sustainable work for the communities involved.
